おくりびと okuribito (departure)

As I wrote a few days ago, I watched the movie "おくりびとokuribito(departure)". It was nice movie, I feel the necessity to think about the death. I agree the judgement of the Academy, hahaha . But i wonder non-Japanese people can understand deeply.

The following I will mention about story of the movie , so if you don't want to know it , please don't read any more.

I really don't know about the other culture about the death and the ways of funerals. Besides, I also don't know so much in Japan. I just have a few experience for far. But still I know some stuff. We have a kind of social customs that we detest "death ". For example, we make purify our body with salt (acutually we poring a few pinch of salt to our self ) after we come back from a crematory. It's very common.

Well, I know another example that I haven't seen yet. When we carry out the casket from the house of the deceased, broke his/her rice bowl in front of the house.

That's why the man was trying to hide his new job, and after the wife knew it, she wanted him to quite it. This is the most importante part of the
movie, I think.

I have lived in Japan for over 5years now, and this was the first non-anime movie that I saw. It was amazing!
I think rituals are only slightly different in different parts of the world but the meaning of them all comes to the same thing.
Death is a part of life and we dont usally think about it until someone dear to us has passed away.
This movie gave me the feeling of being grateful for being alive and having my family and friends. It also made me realize that life is uncertain (when the young school girl dies) and that we have to live our own lives 100% cherishing each moment.
I was happy that the movie won the Oscar. I think everyone will make a connection to this movie, irrespective of their nationality or religion.

Hello, how are you? It's been a long time since I last heard from you. My husband and I watched that movie and we were both glad we did. It showed us the culture of Japan, especially how Japanese deal with death and funerals. Very interesting look at your culture indeed.

I hope you are well despite the lack of posts.

I just watched the trailer for this. It looks really good, and reminds me a little of the Funeral (お葬式), which is one of my all-time favorite movies... in fact, Itami is one of my heroes for Tampopo and the Funeral.

Thanks for the tip, I think I'm going to rent this one.
